Unit 1
Exploring Equal Groups as a Foundation for Multiplication and Division
Lesson 1: Students will understand that multiplication is an operation that uses a number of equal groups to show the total number of objects.
Lesson 2: Students will practice their understanding of multiplication. They will recognize the importance of seeing a group of items as a single unit and that a group contains a given number of objects.
Lesson 3: Students will understand and apply the meanings of division to represent models and solve word problems.
Lesson 4: Students will divide and apply the meanings of division to represent models and solve word problems.
Lesson 5: Students will apply their knowledge of using models to represent division and multiplication.
Lesson 6: Students will extend their understanding that drawings and equations can be used to represent and solve multiplication and division situational problems.
Lesson 7: Students will multiply or divide to solve word problems involving equal groups or arrays.
Lesson 8: Studens will extend their understanding of operation relationships by solving problems using patterns and the relationship between multiplication and division.
Lesson 9: Students will multiply and divide using patterns, properites of operations and inverse relationship of multiplication and division.
Lesson 10: Students will apply strategies such as the relationship between multiplicaiton and division or properties of operations to multiply and divide.
